Codes and conventions for front covers and double page spreads

Front covers

- main image in centre of page - usually of a person or people
- Masthead - large font, all the same size, always in the top third of magazine
- Main article - large font, usually in middle third - anchors meaning of main page. Content is usually new, recent or exclusive.
- Snapshots of other articles - photos/images and/or cover lines usually in left and right thirds. Occasionally along the bottom but these tend to be shorter.\
- Colour scheme. usually 3 or 4 main colours, sometimes uses different shades of a colour for variety.
 - Usually 3 to 4 fonts used, but bold, 3D,  italic added to make them look different
Colour blocks - squares of background colour to add emphasis, added on colour blocks to make it look like it was taken in studio, puffs and pugs are coloured background that are'nt official shapes. Colour blocks are blocks of full colour usually squares that break up the page into different sections
Graphics -  Puffs and pugs, other small features and shapes usually for 'extras'
Layout - No ' dead space' unless using a minimalist approach


Double page spread sheet

 - large main image - takes up a quarter or more of the double page spread.
 - placement is key
 - Clear, large title on top left
 - Subheading - summary/introduction
 - Body copy - article text - usually black text on white background
 - Graphic feature that denotes what type of article it is, or what section it is within- gives it an identity and aids navigation of the magazine.
 - Page numbers on most pages accept for those with a very big image.
 - Title of magazine usually present at top or bottom of page.
 -  Often includes website
 - Date/month

Times

- Formal.                                                        Sophisticated, high brow
- Intelligence                                                  Old fashioned - traditional, reputation, history
- Classic, clear                                                Serious and informative
- Used in formal letters, text books, books     Gravitas - weighty, serious, depth


Arial/Calibri

- Taking action
Simple, clean and easy to read, accessible
